How can we create opportunities for young women who aspire to succeed in the STEM fields and encourage and support more women to enter the field of scientific research? Vazyme interviewed Gloria Zhu, Senior Director of Immunoassay Division, to explore her perspectives on women's careers in the STEM fields. Gloria joined Vazyme in 2015, drawn by the company's positive culture and team spirit, which she believed would support her in tackling future challenges.
Q: As a core R&D member of Vazyme's early Alzheimer's disease diagnosis project, could you tell us about this project?
A: My role involves the development of reagent materials for Alzheimer's disease diagnosis. My team is dedicated to creating antibodies with the highest sensitivity and specificity, as these are crucial for producing excellent diagnostic products. These products act as the "eyes" for clinicians and patients, enabling earlier and more accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Early detection buys time for the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. We have been developing and screening upstream materials for Alzheimer's diagnostic reagents. By monitoring biomarkers in bodily fluids, we can achieve accurate diagnosis in the initial stage of the disease.
Gloria has a strong sense of responsibility and mission at work. When asked about any obstacles she has faced in her career due to her gender, Gloria said that in a traditional way, women bear a greater burden of family responsibilities than men. This can be one of the obstacles to women pursuing careers.
Q: Considering your role, do you perceive any gender gap in the workplace?
A: Women often face more challenges and obstacles in the workplace. Being a wife and mother means women have to juggle family duties with their jobs. Many women are hindered in their career progression due to the burden of family responsibilities. However, men are more likely to access opportunities for promotion and salary increases since they are not expected to assume the bulk of family duties. To close the workplace gender gap, further measures must be taken to support women's career advancement. We also need men to take on more family responsibilities. Only if we work together to create an equal and inclusive society can women overcome societal limitations and fulfill their professional dreams.
Gloria offered an important message for women in the workplace: "Balancing family and career may seem challenging. However, don't hold back from pursuing your dreams. Embrace your passion. The path of scientific exploration is fraught with challenges. Every failure is a step to success, especially for the innovative research projects. I know it must be hard to do what no one's ever done before. But never give up easily. Next step will be better."
